As the lead drummer in Baaba’s band Massamba has performed at just about every major venue on earth. His music reflects the ancient origins of his instrument and the cosmopolitan environment of Dakar, Senegal’s capital, where his work with Baaba Maal began. During that time he has incorporated the fiery Wolof traditions of his homeland into a contemporary sound. He has worked with Afro-pop superstar Baaba Maal and his Daande Lenol Orchestra since its inception over twenty years ago. Massamba Diop is a master of the tama or talking drum from Senegal, West Africa, and the co-founder of The Senegal-America Project. He is very responsible and an excellent role model for our US youth on Africa, Senegalese culture, Muslim religion and the arts. for the Senegal America Project, a cultural educational exchange program. Since his arrival in the US in 2000, he has been busy dancing, making Senegalese clothing, taking additional English classes, raising a family, helping his family back home and traveling with World Rhythms and Arts Are Essential, Inc. Abdou speaks English fluently and is currently dancing with highly respected performing groups in Massachusetts who do arts in education programming: Tony Vacca’s World Rhythms and Bamidele Dancers and Drummers. He is extraordinary, dynamic and very engaging.

He has also collaborated with Sting.ĪBDOU SARR is a dancer from Senegal, West Africa, living in Western Massachusetts. Has been active in the Jazz and World Music stage since the early 1970s. He incorporates percussion instruments from a world of traditions that includes African, Caribbean, Asian and Middle-Eastern influences, to which he adds some of his spoken word and rhythm poetry. Tony Vacca is an American percussionist specializing in jazz and an early innovator in world music. These will be offered on a first come basis based on room capacity and opened up for Middle School starting at end of day Monday.Īt the CREC Performing Arts Center, Tony Vacca, Abdou Sarr, and Massamba Diop of the Senegal-America Project will mix performance and discussion to share the story of how they met and created the Senegal-America project and what they do to maintain their connection despite their own busy lives as musicians and performers.
